23 books finished in 2014: Journey to the Centre of the Earth

23 books finished in 2014.

This book did nothing for me. The illustrations were pretty, so I’m glad I read a copy with illustrations.

Other than that, the narrator was flat, the uncle was entirely motivated by fame, the only woman who had a name was literally nothing but a trophy to be earned, and the guide they hired? The ostensibly dumb brute who always knew how to get them places but never questioned anything nor communicated except when necessary? What a useful plot device!

AND IT WAS BORING! I mean, I get how it might have been exciting at one time, with all of the new “scientific” information, and…nope. This book has been made into a modern movie. Wikipedia claims “it still manages to captivate audiences when regarded as a classic fantasy novel.” I DISAGREE! NOT CAPTIVATED! MAD ABOUT IT!

Feel free to disagree with me! Tell me why I’m wrong! I love when books are redeemed.
