10 books finished in 2014

I borrowed this book from a housemate, who recommended it when I was looking for something short and uplifting to read before bed. (I’ve been slogging through a lot of long or serious books lately – the type of books that require me to take notes!)

It was historical fiction for children, set in Judea during the time of Jesus. (wikipedia)

Do you have any historical fiction recommendations? I tend to enjoy books I’ve read in that genre, but don’t have a source for tracking down new ones.

  1. I remember reading and liking this book as a kid. Although I much preferred her other YA novel, “The Witch of Blackbird Pond.” Recommended if you haven’t read it.

    I don’t really read a lot of historical fiction myself, but it’s not out of any dislike of the genre. I’ve heard good things about Hilary Mantel’s books (she won the Man Booker Prize twice for them), but haven’t read them myself (Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies). Others I’ve liked that come to mind:

    * Memoirs of Hadrian, Marguerite Yourcenar
    * A Mercy, Toni Morrison
    * Sophie’s Choice, William Styron
    * March, Geraldine Brooks
